Our School

FEC/CA is a vibrant school located in Hazel Hill, in Guysborough County, Nova Scotia.  Our students come from a variety of deep-rooted rural communities within about a 35 km radius.

Our school has approximately 160 students, Grades PP-12 (ages 3-18+), 16.5 teaching staff (including one vice principal and one principal), approximately 10 support staff, and several regional staff members supporting our school.

Our school community, local communities, families, residents, businesses, and neighboring communities have high expectations of our education system, are strong, and are committed to advocating and supporting authentic and meaningful learning experiences for our students. The school is the heart of our community and is regularly used by the community.

Our population is diverse in identity, and includes members of the African Nova Scotian, Mi’kmaw, Metis, Inuit, 2SLGBTQ+, and neuro-diverse and physically diverse abilities communities.  We embrace, are responsive, and committed to meeting the needs of our students, families, and their communities.

We encourage and depend on community members and volunteers to help with our school programming and operations (like universal food programs, coaching, extra-curricular, etc.).  In turn, we regularly give back through student volunteer opportunities and activities for our citizens (like co-op programs, food bank initiatives, fundraisers, donations, etc.). We truly take care of each other.

At Fanning, all grade configurations, all curriculum, and all teachers are encouraged to instruct using a culturally responsive and universally designed approach, and to utilize play-based and inquiry-based strategies, value real world experiences, and promote thinking. Our outdoor education facility is regularly integrated in daily instruction. Being creative and play-based and inquiry-based, using authentic and natural learning opportunities will help us meet diverse needs and curriculum outcomes. Our programming is inclusive of all learners at all times, with additional programming for small groups (intervention) and individuals.  We work through and support our students through a multi-tiered system of supports.
