Our School

FEC/CA is a vibrant school located in Hazel Hill, in Guysborough County, Nova Scotia, just a few kilometers from the picturesque seaside village of Canso.  Our students come from a variety of deep-rooted rural communities along the most easterly tip of “Canada’s Ocean Playground”.

Our school has approximately 176 students from Pre-primary to Grade 12.  Our wonderful staff consists of 17.5 teaching staff (including one vice principal and one principal), approximately 16 support staff, and several regional staff members supporting our school.

Our school is considered to be the heart of our community.  With tremendous support by local groups, organizations, and families, we are committed to advocating and supporting authentic and meaningful learning experiences for our students.   We embrace, are responsive and committed to meeting the needs of our students, families, and their communities.

We encourage and depend on community members and volunteers to help with our school programming and operations (like universal food programs, coaching, extra-curricular, etc.).  In turn, we regularly give back through student volunteer opportunities and activities for our citizens (like co-op programs, food bank initiatives, fundraisers, donations, etc.). We truly take care of each other.

At Fanning, all grade configurations, all curriculum, and all teachers are encouraged to instruct using a culturally responsive and universally designed approach, and to utilize play-based and inquiry-based strategies, value real world experiences and promote thinking. Our Knowledge Path,  an outdoor education facility, is regularly integrated in daily instruction. Being creative and play-based and inquiry-based, using authentic and natural learning opportunities will help us meet diverse needs and curriculum outcomes. Our programming is inclusive of all learners at all times, with additional programming for small groups (intervention) and individuals.  We work through and support our students through a multi-tiered system of supports.
