Welcome Back to Fanning Education Centre/Canso Academy

Welcome to Fanning Education Centre/Canso Academy (FEC/CA), home of the Seahawks! We are a Pre-primary to Grade 12 school located in Hazel Hill just outside the beautiful coastal village of Canso, Nova Scotia. Our school sits on a large, natural parcel of land with our very own trail system (known as the “FEC/CA Knowledge Path”) through the woods leading to a freshwater lake enhanced with outdoor learning spaces.
Every day, we strive to live up to our vision statement of empowering students to become independent, productive, lifelong learners while fostering confidence and well-being. To do this, we rely on a strong partnership among families, students, staff and administration. Whether you are a student, parent, guardian or staff member, we welcome and value your positivity and dedication to excellence in education, and we look forward to working with all of you.
At FEC/CA, we begin every day with a nutritious breakfast program to assist students’ minds and bodies to be ready to learn. After this great start to the day, students find themselves in a wide range of classes. Our hard working, caring and creative teachers implement the curriculum and design engaging learning experiences that meet a wide variety of students’ strengths, challenges and interests. We offer a variety of extra-curricular and co-curricular activities for students to enhance learning and school experiences. One of the many strengths of attending a smaller school like FEC/CA is that our teachers and staff build strong, trusting relationships with our students. We are proud of this, as we know it helps improve student learning and well-being. By late October, we also hope to have the provincial School Lunch Program operational. We’ll be sure to keep you posted on this wonderful initiative.
Our team is excited to welcome students and families back to school. We will continue to host family events to showcase our students’ work. As the administrative team, we look forward to working with students and families to provide our students with a supportive and responsive learning environment which promotes wellness, growth and achievement in an inclusive and welcoming school environment. We strongly believe in the African Proverb, “It takes a village to raise a child”, and we also believe it takes a village to educate a child. We cannot think of a better village in which to do so!
To our families and community partners, your continuing support is greatly appreciated. We look forward to creating wonderful learning experiences during the upcoming academic year! As always, your input is important to us, so please don’t hesitate to reach out to us at anytime.
